“We have a shared history”: roots travel to Indonesia across Indo-European generations

This article explores senses of belonging three Indo-European generations and examines how these are influenced by roots travel to contemporary Indonesia. We use the notion tourism refer ancestral homelands ‘experience heritage at personal level’. While has gained scholarly attention, multiple diasporic often studied as a single phenomenon. By analysing life story interviews with Indo-Europeans from first, second third generation within twenty-one families, this motivations, expectations, lived experiences meanings their travels. The multigenerational nature empirical data enables differentiation across generations, highlights generational nuances interlinkages in Indo-Europeans’ belonging, positions larger colonial family histories experiences. argue that ancestries, collective memories Dutch East Indies connect various accounts reveal both familial transformations, travels potentially fostered engagements own or traumatic pasts, disrupted practices silences sparked interests (re)discover one’s Indonesian heritage.
